Clos St. Antonin Côtes du Rhône 2016 (France) - Wine Review

Tonight's red wine review is a lovely Côtes du Rhône that I purchased from the December 7th LCBO VINTAGES Release in 2019.

It is produced by siblings Christophe and Isabelle Sabon of the family that owns Domaine de la Janasse. Christophe and Isabelle decided to embark on a new adventure and purchased St. Antonin after the 2014 harvest. The property is located in the town of Jon-Quières and has 15 hectares of vines and has terraces of pebbles on clay (marls) soils preserved from erosion. The entire vineyard, which is oriented north-south, was re-worked and redesigned with respect for the terroir and environment.

This particular Côtes du Rhône red wine is a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, and 10% Syrah grown just south of St. Antonin on plots characterized by clay and silt soils resting on marls, from vines averaging 40 years of age. The grapes were manually harvested and sorted in the vineyard. with 80% de-stemmed prior to maceration and fermentation. It was aged for 9 months in concrete vats and casks.

The 2016 vintage was excellent across the Rhône Valley. With a long, drawn-out growing season, Grenache became intensely concentrated, while Mourvèdre was able to reach full phenolic ripeness. Let's see how this 2016 Rhône red is tasting tonight...

A blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, and 10% Syrah aged in concrete vats and casks, the fragrant, medium-high to highly aromatic nose leads with savoury meaty notes, mingling with spices, garrigue, kirsch, dark berry, black cherry, and blackberry aromas. Impressively concentrated on the medium-full to full-bodied palate, it has savoury, earthy, and green herb flavours surrounding a dark berry, garrigue, and kirsch flavoured core. There's a touch of warmth on the mid-palate, but not out balance, along with fresh, juicy acidity, and smooth, refined, lightly chalky tannins. Finishes savoury with stony minerals on the long finish. Should continue to drink well over the next couple of years. Score: 91 pts

Wakefield Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 and 2019 (Australia) - Wine Reviews

Tonight's red wine reviews consist of a mini-vertical of Cabernet Sauvignon wines by Wakefield Wines. I first enjoyed the 2018 Wakefield Estate Cabernet Sauvignon last June and am curious to see how it compare it now with the 2019 vintage that arrived at the LCBO last weekend as part of the May 21st LCBO VINTAGES Release.

Wakefield Wines was established by the Taylor family in 1969. Bill Taylor Sr. and his two sons, Bill and John, decided to create a proper "old world" style of estate and settled in the Clare Valley by the Wakefield River. The Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wines were their first wines and are the heart of their business. While the range has since expanded and not all of the fruit is grown on the estate, every bottle is still crafted at their Clare Valley Estate with the same care and attention as the very first vintage.

Today, Wakefield Wines is run by the third generation of the Taylor family - Mitchell, Justin, and Clinton Taylor, three sons of Bill Taylor Jr. Although less involved with day-to-day operations of the family business, Bill Taylor Jr. is still very much a driving force behind the vision of the company. The Taylor family is committed to ensuring that they operate in a responsible and sustainable manner on both the land and sea.

Wakefield has a strong connection to the sea - while excavating the winery site in Clare Valley to secure a water source, Bill Taylor Sr. discovered tiny seahorses in the limestone bedrock and served as a reminder that these soils were under water more 600 million years ago. The seahorse is now a symbol of the family's wine brand with three seahorses representing the three generations of Taylor family winemakers. The seahorse is also their symbol of sustainability as they support two initiatives to protect seahorses and secure thriving populations.

On the innovative front, all Estate Label wines feature an Optimum Drinking Temperature sensor on the back label that will tell you when each wine is ready to enjoy. Each sensor is calibrated to each varietal and wine, and it touch-activated. To use the sensor, simply touch it and compare the colour to the chart located on the left. If the colour of the sensor falls between the optimum temperature indicated in the chart, then the wine is ready to drink.

Screw cap. The fragrant, medium-high intensity nose offers a lovely mix of cassis, dark currant, and savoury earth undertones accented with minty herbs, milk chocolate, and wood spices. On the medium-full bodied palate it has smooth, refined, supple tannins and fresh, juicy acidity that lifts the currant, cassis, milk chocolate, savoury earth, and minty herb flavour replays. A bit softer and smoother than tasted last year, and finishing with savoury, earthy, and mocha notes, with very good length. Score: 88+ pts

WAKEFIELD ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2019 - Clare Valley/Limestone Coast, South Australia (#744235) (XD) - $19.95
Aged for up to 12 months in French oak barrels prior to blending and bottling. Enclosed by screw cap. The fragrant, medium-high intensity nose is fresh with a pleasing mix of minty herbs, cassis, dark currant, and black cherry aromas backed by savoury earthy undertones and subtle wood spice. The medium-full bodied palate is ripe with currant, cassis, earthy, and wood spice flavours in a slightly tangy profile. Ripe tannins are smooth and well-integrated with a subtle chalky textured mouthfeel, while the acids are fresh and juicy. Nicely balanced throughout with earthy notes lingering on the long finish. Recommended buy! Score: 89 pts

Castello di Bossi Berardo Riserva Chianti Classico 2016 (Tuscany) - Wine Review

After enjoying the lovely 2018 Castello di Bossi C. Berardenga Chianti Classico a few months ago, for tonight's red wine review we go up a notch with a Riserva Chianti Classico from the same producer that arrived at the LCBO today as part of the May 21st LCBO VINTAGES Release.

Castello di Bossi is located in Chianti Classico's southernmost commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, approximately 50 kilometres southeast of Florence and 14 kilometres east of Siena. The name "Bossi" is apparently linked to a money chest made of the rare and prized boxwood which the Roman army would carry to its encampments to pay the soldiers. Local inscriptions dating back to the 1st century A.D. indicate that a Roman settlement existed on the site where Castello di Bossi resides.

Today, Castello di Bossi is owned by Bacci Wines. While growing up in Tuscany, Marco Bacci developed a passion for wine and purchased the estate in 1983, bottling his first wines a couple of years later after spending some time learning about the soil and vines. The estate covers an area of 650 hectares, with most of the 124 hectares of vines planted to Sangiovese. The Bacci family uses modern viticultural practices to consistently harvest the best quality fruit in order to best express the terroir and grape variety. With great care and an eye for detail, the Bacci family uses only estate fruit to produce their wines and believes that nature plays a significant role in the quality of their wines.

This red wine is 100% Sangiovese from the Berardo Vineyard within the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga. The commune is located at the southernmost tip of the Chianti Classico zone and Berardo is a shorthand way of saying "it comes from Berardenga." The Berardo Vineyard is 88 acres in size and planted on calcareous clay-loam soils at an elevation of 1,155 feet with southern exposure to the sun. It was fermented in stainless steel tanks, followed by ageing in French barriques and casks for 18-24 months, and then aged in bottle for 6 months prior to release. First produced in 1994, let's see how this 2016 Riserva Chianti Classico is tasting tonight...

CASTELLO DI BOSSI BERARDO RISERVA CHIANTI CLASSICO 2016 - DOCG, Tuscany, Italy (#113316) (XD) - $38.95
This 100% Sangiovese has a lovely, open, fragrant, and fresh nose delivering aromas of Damson plum, red cherry, spices, sandalwood, and savoury wet earth with rose floral accents. It's medium-full bodied on the chewy, structured palate with very appealing Damson plum, red cherry, savoury earth, and sweet spice flavours. Acids are fresh and lively, while the ripe, youthful tannins have some grip that will reward ageing. Savoury with lovely flavour replays lingering on the long, youthful finish. While enjoyable now, this should be even better in 3-4 years and drink well to at least the end of the decade. Highly recommended buy! Score: 93 pts

Fontanafredda Pradalupo Roero Arneis 2020 (Piedmont) - Wine Review

Following up on the lovely 2019 Fontanafredda Gavi di Gavi that I enjoyed last May, tonight's white wine review is another delicious Italian white wine from the same producer. This wine is made with the Arneis variety and arrives at the LCBO this weekend as part of the May 21 LCBO VINTAGES Release.

Fontanafredda was founded in 1858 by the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, when he purchased the estate for the woman he loved - Rosa Vercellana. Although Fontanafredda is a large Piedmontese producer (known mostly for their Barolo) making fine wines from the most important DOC and DOCG of Piedmont, they are artisans who promote interaction between the vine, soil, and the hand of man.

There were many accomplishments over the years, including several firsts for the region, but the big change happened after 77 years when Fontanafredda returned to Piedmontese ownership in 2008 when Oscar Farinetti and Luca Baffigo purchased the estate. In 2015, Fontanafredda moved towards sustainability and starting the process of converting all of their vineyards to organic farming with the first certified organic harvest coming three years later.

This Arneis was grown in the Roero DOCG north of Alba in Piedmont, across the Tanaro river from the legendary Barolo and Barbaresco denominations. The vines sit between 200 to 300 metres above sea level and were planted in unique sandy soils that are rich in yellow, calcareous marl. The grapes were hand-harvested with 50% de-stemmed, crushed, and cold macerated, then softly pressed, while the other half is direct pressed. Fermentation occurred at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks, followed by another 4 to 5 months ageing on its dregs (or lees). Let's see how this 2020 Roero Arneis is tasting tonight...

The fragrant, medium-high intensity nose offers lovely lemon citrus, white floral, white peach, and hay aromas with subtle leesy, herbal, and flor notes adding further complexity and interest. There's very good weight and concentration on the crunchy, medium-full bodied, dry, and slightly oily palate with citrusy, white peach, herbal, hay, and leesy flavour replays, plus apple in a honeyed profile. Acids are fresh and juicy, while honeysuckle, citrus, white peach, and leesy notes linger on the long, juicy finish. Highly recommended buy! Score: 90 pts

May 21, 2022 LCBO VINTAGES Release Wine Picks: Rosé

With warmer weather arriving, that usually means the return of many refreshing rosé wines at the LCBO. As such, the theme of the long weekend's May 21, 2022 LCBO VINTAGES Release is rosé wines. Also included in the magazine is a sneak preview of the June Online Exclusives. Wines from the May 21st release should be on shelves across Ontario by this Saturday, if not a day or two earlier.

We begin with the theme on rosé wines, which are not only ideal for summer drinking, but can also be enjoyed year-round. Of the fourteen wines listed as part of the theme, four are included among my top rosé wine picks and all are dry rosés from France. We start in the east in Provence with the Whispering Angel that is made with Grenache, Cinsault, and Rolle (Vermentino), while the AIX is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault. Moving westward into Rhône is the Tavel (which is one of the Wines of the Month) that consists of mainly Grenache, Clairette, and Syrah, but typically also includes other red and white varieties. Lastly, moving southwest is the rosé from Languedoc that consists of roughly 60% Grenache, 30% Cinsault, and 10% Syrah.

My red wine recommendations includes the other Wine of the Month - a delicious Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon. French red wine blends include a fine red from Bordeaux that is made with 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Rhône red that is primarily Grenache with Syrah and Mourvèdre in support. Staying in France, the wine from Roussillon is a blend of 40% Grenache, 40% Syrah, and 20% Mourvèdre, while the Beaujolais is crafted with 100% Gamay. From Italy, the Valpolicella consists of 35% Corvina, 35% Corvinone, 20% Rondinella, and 10% Rossignola / Oseleta / Negrara / Dindarella, while the Riserva Chianti Classico is 100% Sangiovese. And lastly, the red wine from Argentina is a blend of 55% Malbec, 19% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Syrah, 2% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc.

Among my white wine picks, the only blend is the Côtes du Rhône Blanc that consists of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier. Single varietal wines include a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, as well as the Fumé Blanc from Niagara that is a barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc. There's also a fine, dry Riesling from Niagara, a concentrated Pinot Grigio from Friuli, an Arneis from Piedmont, and a Chablis which is, of course, made with Chardonnay. The only wine with any kind of sweetness is the off-dry Gewurztraminer from Alsace.

Xavier Vignon Côtes du Rhône 2020 (France) - Wine Review

Tonight's red wine review is this lovely, organic Côtes du Rhône that I've had the pleasure of enjoying on a couple of occasions over the last few years. The latest edition of this Rhône red will arrive in stores at the LCBO this weekend as part of the May 21st LCBO VINTAGES Release.

It is produced by Xavier Vignon, a man who started out as an consultant oenologist in 1996 in a laboratory in Vaucluse for 30+ cellars. Originally of Picardie in the North of France, he followed his passions of music and natural sciences and landed in Champagne to study in the faculty of pharmacy in Reims. A chance encounter with an oenologist while studying and Xavier caught the wine bug. He applied to the French National Diploma of Oenology and gained valuable experience working at several Champagne houses. Xavier worked several harvests across the globe, found mentors, and eventually settled in the southern Rhône Valley in 1996. He was amazed by the variety of terroirs and cultivars across the southern Rhône Valley and gained a reputation as a slightly mad consultant with innovative techniques.

In 1999, Xavier began producing artisanal cuvees from his garage for his friends. One of his friends secretly took his wines and submitted them to Guide Hachette where they received critical acclaim. In 2002, he started creating his own wines under the Xavier Vins label. Today, Xavier Vignon's two fundamental values are the love for a job well done and the capacity to transmit knowledge. He bottles wines under his own name and is known as a Terroir Hunter and Master Blender. With respect for the environment, Xavier's wines are the result of a scientific background, a great deal of experience, confidence in others, total involvement, exchange of knowledge, and shared pleasure.

My last full review of this wine was the 2017 Xavier Vignon Côtes du Rhône that I enjoyed three summers ago. This organic red wine continues to be a blend of primarily Grenache, with Syrah and Mourvèdre in support. The Grenache comes from 80-year-old vines, the Syrah from 45-year-old vines, and the Mourvèdre is from 60-year-old vines. The grapes were grown on Galets roulés (rolled pebbles), sands, clay, and limestone soils located mostly in the northern part of the Vaucluse and altitude parcels. Manually harvested, the grapes were fermented at moderate temperatures to favour soft diffusion of flavour compounds, and aged in concrete tanks for a short period of time. With a generally dry, sunny growing season, the 2020 vintage promises to be a very good year. Let's see how this 2020 Côtes du Rhône is tasting tonight...

XAVIER VIGNON CÔTES DU RHÔNE 2020 - AP, France (#297317) (XD) - $17.95
This organic wine is primarily Grenache with Syrah and Mourvèdre in support, aged in concrete tanks, and has a clean, fragrant, mineral-inflected nose layered with ripe black, blueberry, and violet aromas with meaty and dried herbal touches. On the medium-full bodied palate it is ripe and slightly warming, yet balanced, with black-blue-purple fruits, violet, stony mineral, and meaty flavours. Acids are crisp and juicy, while the ripe, supple tannins have some structure and chalky grip. Very good length on the long, savoury, minerally finish. I really like this. Recommended buy! Score: 89 pts

Château d'Aquéria Tavel 2021 (Rhône) - Wine Review

Tonight's rosé wine review is this refreshingly lovely wine from the Tavel Cru in the southern Rhône Valley that is coming to LCBO VINTAGES on May 21 as the Wine of the Month and featured as part of the theme on rosé wines.

The long and fascinating history of Château d'Aquéria began in 1595 when Louis Joseph d'Aqueria purchased this prime vine-growing area of Tavel known as "Puy Sablonneux" from the monks at the Abbey in Villeneuve les Avignon. His son, Robert d'Aqueria, hereditary Count Palatine, built a home which was transformed in the 18th century into the Château as it stands today. Many families have since owned the Château, cherishing the lands as they honed the art of crafting wine with knowledge of their terroir, the vines, and the fruit of those vines. Today, Aquéria is owned and operated by brothers Bruno and Vincent de Bez. Aquéria has been applying environmentally-friendly winegrowing techniques for over 20 years while also preserving and protecting local floral and fauna. Sustainable agriculture and respect for the environment is part of Aquéria's identity.

The 2021 edition of this lovely Tavel Rosé is a blend of mainly Grenache, Clairette, and Syrah, and typically also includes small amounts of other varietals. The grapes were grown around the Château on sandy-clayey soils which are ideal for producing great rosé wines that are both fruity and complex. The grapes were hand-harvested and de-stemmed, then macerated to extract colour and structure. The varieties were then blended two-by-two to enhance aromatic complexity, then underwent temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel vats. A second blending took place in December before bottling this unoaked rosé.

At Château d'Aquéria, the climate is quintessentially Mediterranean with low rainfall, strong sunshine, and exposure to the Mistral winds. The growing season in 2021 was marked by capricious weather and seasons. Although Château d'Aquéria was spared freeze damage, they did have to be extremely vigilant throughout the season and their efforts were rewarded with a superb vintage in terms of both quality and quantity.

Having enjoyed previous vintages of this rosé, including most recently the 2020 Château d'Aquéria Tavel last May, I would expect this dry rosé to also be quite lovely. Let's see how this 2021 Tavel Rosé is tasting tonight...

CHÂTEAU D'AQUÉRIA TAVEL 2021 - AC, Rhône, France (#319368) (XD) - $24.95
Blend of mainly Grenache, Clairette, and Syrah, the lovely, medium-high intensity aromatics offer fresh, red fruited aromas of raspberry, strawberry, cherry, and fine mineral notes with hints of citrus and peach. On the dry, medium-full bodied palate it is very nicely balanced with raspberry, cherry, strawberry, currant, mineral, and citrus flavours, plus lightly peppery and herbal notes, all lifted by fresh acidity. Minerally, red fruited, and citrus notes linger on the long, juicy, and crisp finish. I think even better than last year's edition. Highly recommended buy! Score: 91+ pts
