Estate Papaioannou Saint George Agiorgitiko 2019 (Greece) - Wine Review

red wine review is a lovely organic and vegan-friendly Agiorgitiko from Nemea in Greece. It arrived at the LCBO in last month's LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection.

It is produced by Estate Papaioannou, a small, family-owned Greek winery situated in Ancient Nemea, within the Peloponnese wine region of southern Greece. While the Papaioannou family has deep viticultural roots in Nemea going back to the 19th century, the modern estate winery was established in the 1950s by Thanasis Papaioannou.

Mr. Papaioannou was one of the first wine producers who understood and promoted the idea that wine must maintain its unique characteristics - the grape variety, the vineyard's location, as well as the work in the vineyard, while ensuring biological balance. The family has about 60 hectares of private vineyards located in various vineyard plots within Nemea, and are planted to both Greek and international varieties. All the family's vineyards are 100% organically cultivated, with the aim of achieving ultimate harmony with the ecosystem. Thanasis Papaioannou passed away in 2019 at the age of 92.

George Papaioannou, son of Thanasis, carries on his father's tradition. As a chemist-oenologist, George is creatively active in his own vineyards, as well as in the modern winery of Ancient Nemea. The goal is for the continuous improvement of the wines produced, maintain the highest standards of hygiene and organic characteristics, as well as experiment with new types of wines. With vineyards situated in different areas of Nemea, which are characterized by differences in the ecosystem and age of the vines, the result is wines of multi-dynamism. The quality of the wine is further enhanced by the correct selection of a satisfactory number of varieties, along with the profound knowledge of its pioneers about everything related to the vineyard and its cultivation. With a commitment to sustainable practices, Estate Papaioannou has been farming organically since 2004. Papaioannou Winery is certified by the state-controlled DIO, and more recently achieved USDA NOP organic certification.

This red wine is crafted with 100% Agiorgitiko, a native Greek grape varietal which also often goes by the name St. George. The grapes for this wine were grown in their 60 hectare estate vineyard in Nemea, at 350 metres above sea level. The vines are 35-years-old and planted on clay soil with gravels, and trained using the Royat double cordon system. It was vinified by undergoing a cool temperature fermentation using indigenous yeasts, with 2 weeks of maceration time. The wine was matured for 12 months in 300 L American and French oak barrels, 50% new and 50% 1-year-old, followed by 6 months of bottle ageing.

The 2019 vintage in Greece is considered to be one of the best in the last 20+ years with consistent, evenly distributed rainfall, and without extreme periods of heat, which resulted in a high-acid vintage. In Nemea, low temperatures during winter and spring, combined with continuous rainfall, resulted in late maturation during all stages of ripening. The summer months and September experienced heat and drought conditions, which ensured good hygiene for most grape varieties. With normal yields and excellent grape health, the resulting wines are characterized by high acidity, which gives aromatic wines good varietal expression. ESTATE PAPAIOANNOU SAINT GEORGE AGIORGITIKO 2019 - Vegan, PDO Nemea, Greece (#27217) (XD) - $29.95
This organic Agiorgitiko is fragrant and open, with a medium-high intensity nose offering a lovely, complex mix of dark fruited spices revealing layers of black cherry, blackberry, sandalwood, and savoury earth aromas nuanced with touches of rose floral, dried cherry, and barnyard. On the dry, medium-full bodied palate it has oak spice, dark berry, black cherry, black plum, peppery spice, and smoky mineral flavours. It is well-structured with crisp and juicy acidity, as well as refined, gritty tannins. Touches of intriguing menthol notes on the back palate, while waves of black cherry, pepper, and oak spice notes lead to smoky minerals with excellent length on the crisp finish. Highly recommended buy! Score: 91 pts

Boutari Naoussa Red 2022 (Greece) - Wine Review

red wine review is a lovely Xinomavro (ksee-NOH-mah-vroh) from Naoussa in northern Greece. A perennial favourite, this latest vintage arrived at the LCBO in the LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection, with plenty of bottles still available for purchase across Ontario.

It is produced by one of Greece's most historic and influential wineries - Boutari. It was established by Ioannis Boutaris with a winery bearing his name in 1879 in Naoussa, Macedonia in northern Greece. By 1906, Mr. Boutaris built the city's first privately-owned winery and retail cellar, while also launching the production of the first Greek red wine that was bottled under the now-renowned "Naoussa Boutari" label.

In the mid-1930s, Stelios Boutaris, son of Ioannis, took over the reins of the family winery and began exporting their wines to export markets, while also opening a second winery in Naoussa. In 1968, Giannis and Konstantinos Boutaris, the two sons of Stelios took over the winery and propelled it to new heights and shaped it into what it is today, including a shift to focus on viticulture. In 1978, Boutari inaugurated their new, state-of-the-art winery in Stenimachos, Naoussa, which remains the centre of their production, ageing, and bottling processes to this day. Boutari's success culminated with the Naoussa Boutari label making Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2013 list.

In 2022, Boutari Wineries turned a new chapter when it became a member of Sterner Stenhus Greece group. While Boutari is now under new ownership, the vision for the winery is to respect the historic name that is synonymous with Greek wine, while also promising to continue the long-standing tradition of Boutari wineries and develop them further.

The wineries of Boutari are located in Greece's most important wine-producing regions, which allows the producer to explore the potential and specificities of each region and to highlight both the region itself and its varieties. Arguably, Naoussa is the most important Greek wine region and Boutari's headquarters are in Naoussa, a region of Macedonia on the eastern edge of Vermio. Boutari's journey began in Naoussa, and with it, Greek wine was introduced to the world. As a key player in Greek winemaking and one of the country's most historic wineries, viticulture in the Naoussa of northern Greece is deeply rooted in their past. Boutari was instrumental in the preservation of the indigenous Xinomavro grape, as well as the promotion and recognition of the variety and the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) zone of Naoussa. All of this was achieved by producing excellent and historically significant wines.

Boutari has also taken steps to introduce sustainability practices by optimizing the vineyard and wine processes in order to produce wines of endearing taste, identity, and character. In their vineyards, Boutari applies organic farming principles, while respecting their environmental footprint. Moreover, they treat the vine as part of the ecosystem and focus on strengthening its natural defences and resilience.

First bottled at the beginning of the 20th century, this red wine is the most emblematic wine of modern Greek wine history. This wine is also one of the first Greek red bottled PDO wines and constitutes a landmark for red wines in Greece. Like the previous vintage - the lovely 2021 Boutari Naoussa Xinomavro that I enjoyed last year - this red wine is also crafted with 100% Xinomavro, although it doesn't mention this anywhere on the front label and is stated in quite small letters on the back label. To vinify this wine, the grapes were cold-macerated for 24 hours, with a small percentage bled off for rosé production. It underwent a controlled alcoholic fermentation with selected yeast strains at 20°C–27°C, with gentle extraction with few pumpovers, and was followed by malolactic fermentation. It was aged for 12 months in 5th- and 6th-use French oak barrels, and filtered using sheet filtration prior to bottling.

The growing season in Naoussa in 2022 began intensely cold, with intervals of rain, which resulted in increased bud fertility and the ensuing increase in yields. March and April were colder and wetter than average, with a later bud break, while temperatures returned to typical by early May. The summer ripening season was mostly mild, except for a heatwave in the first half of August, while September began with notable rainfall, along with typically high temperatures during the day and low temperatures at night. From a vintage that produced very good to excellent results, let's see how this 2022 Xinomavro from Naoussa, Greece, is tasting tonight...

Boutari Naoussa Red 2022 (90+ pts)

BOUTARI NAOUSSA RED 2022 - PDO Naoussa, Macedonia, Greece (#23218) (XD) - $19.95
This 100% Xinomavro has a medium+ intensity nose that seems a bit shy initially, offering an enticing mix of sun-dried tomato, rose petals, spice, ripe red cherry, and savoury earth aromas accented with leafy herbs. The medium+ bodied palate is well-structured with ripe tannins and fresh acidity supporting the red cherry, rose floral, sun-dried tomato, and leafy herb flavours in a nicely balanced profile. More savoury with earth, cedary oak, and spice notes on the mid-palate, alongside a crisp mouthfeel and gently chalky textured tannins. Sun-dried tomato, cherry, and rose florals taper to earthy notes on the long, savoury, and mineral-tinged finish. Highly recommended buy! Score: 90+ pts

Alpha Estate Turtles Single Vineyard Malagouzia 2024 and Hedgehog Single Vineyard Xinomavro 2022 (Greece) - Wine Reviews

wine reviews are a pair of excellent, vegan-friendly wines from Greece that arrived at the LCBO last month. The Xinomavro arrived in the LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection, while the Malagouzia arrived in the LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection, and both wines are readily available across Ontario.

Alpha Estate Turtles Single Vineyard Malagouzia 2024 (91+ pts) and Hedgehog Single Vineyard Xinomavro 2022 (91 pts)

Both of these wines are produced by Alpha Estate, a highly-regarded winery situated in the Amyndeon region of Florina, in Northwestern Macedonia of Greece. It was established in 1997 by experienced viticulturist Makis Mavridis, and chemist-oenologist Angelos Iatridis. They gained many years of experience and had passion in their respective fields before becoming business partners and creating their own wines from vineyards planted in Amyndeon.

The modern winery of Alpha Estate is now run by the next generation of the families, Angeliki Iatridou and Emorfili Mavridou, daughters of Angelos and Makis. Together, they carry on the knowledge and passion for winemaking, while respecting tradition and evolving to participate in Alpha Estate's common vision. With a 220-hectare privately-owned vineyard with a unique ecosystem situated in Amyndeon, they respect nature and use the most recent international standards in eco-friendly and sustainable farming practices and winemaking. The soul of their work is the team of people that contribute every day to the dream, to craft wines with professional know-how and experience throughout each stage, from vineyard to production to promotion.

Alpha Estate's winemaking facility is located at the heart of the vineyard, thereby allowing the grapes to arrive at the winery upon harvesting in the shortest amount of time. Furthermore, the grapes are harvested during the coolest hours of the day and transported to the winery in special refrigerators, which allows the grapes' organoleptic characteristics to be protected and shows the great respect that Alpha Estate has for grapes. The modern winemaking facility was designed to allow the grapes to move throughout the winery by using gravity, which allows for minimum possible stress on the raw material. The winery was constructed in the mid-2000s using highly inactive and neutral materials in order to create a completely neutral atmospheric condition inside the winery, which helps protect the quality of the grape, must, and wine.

This Malagouzia was grown in their Turtles vineyard, on the Amyndeon plateau of Northwestern Macedonia, and named "Turtles" because freshwater turtles are commonly found in the nearby lakes and wetlands. The privately-owned 220-hectare vineyard is situated at 620–710 metres above sea level, which is among the highest vineyards in Greece, and planted on sandy – sandy clay soil over limestone, with excellent drainage. To craft this wine, the grapes were hand-harvested on September 14th, destemmed, and optically sorted. After undergoing light crushing, the grapes underwent a temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, with skin contact. The wine remained in contact with its fine lees for 2 months, with regular stirring.

The Xinomavro was grown by Alpha Estate's founder, Makis Mavridis, and crafted by winemaker Angelos Iatridis. The grapes were grown at Mavridis' privately-owned Hedgehog vineyard on the Amyndeon plateau of Northwestern Macedonia. The vineyard is named "Hedgehog" because of the hedgehogs that are commonly found in the area, and is planted between 620–710 metres above sea level, with northern exposure to the sun and facing Lake Petron and Mount Voras. The grapes were brought to the winery and destemmed. Without crushing, the grapes were cold-soaked with skin contact, and underwent alcoholic fermentation at gradually increasing temperatures while maintaining contact sue lie for 8 months, with regular stirring. It was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, followed by maturation in bottle for 12 months.

ALPHA ESTATE TURTLES SINGLE VINEYARD MALAGOUZIA 2024 - Vegan, PGI Florina, Greece (#32161) (XD) - $19.95
This 100% Malagouzia has a lifted, medium-high to highly aromatic nose that offers an elegant mix of leesy, limestone mineral, lemon citrus, and grapefruit aromas flecked with spring flowers, herbs, peach, and tropical fruit. On the dry, medium+ bodied palate it is dense and impressively structured with crunchy lemon citrus, stony mineral, spice, grapefruit, and herbal flavours nuanced with peach and floral notes. It has crisp, lively, and well-structured acidity, along with a fine, gently chalky textured mouthfeel. Juicy with lemon citrus notes tapering to stony and leesy minerals on the finish, with excellent length. Highly recommended buy! Score: 91+ pts

Alpha Estate Turtles Single Vineyard Malagouzia 2024 (91+ pts)

ALPHA ESTATE HEDGEHOG SINGLE VINEYARD XINOMAVRO 2022 - Vegan, PDO Amyndeon, Greece (#259762) (XD) - $29.95
Clean and open, this has a medium-high intensity nose of tomato leaf mingling red cherry, dried rose floral, savoury earth, mineral, licorice, and sandalwood aromas that pleasantly evolve in the glass. The mid-weighted palate is dry and gently spicy with ripe red fruited notes of plum, cherry, tomato leaf, licorice, dried rose floral layered over savoury earth and oak spice flavours. It has fresh, juicy, and lemony acidity, while the supple, textured tannins are mildly grippy, with good structure. The tomato and red fruit notes give way to savoury and earthy minerals on the long finish. Highly recommended buy! Score: 91 pts

Domaine Skouras Grande Cuvée Agiorgitiko 2022 (Greece) - Wine Review

red wine review is a lovely Agiorgitiko from Greece that made its debut at the LCBO earlier this month in the LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection as an Online & Flagship Exclusive - with many bottles still available for purchase both online and in 20 stores in the Greater Toronto and Ottawa areas.

It is produced by Domaine Skouras, a well-known and highly-regarded winery that was established by George Skouras within the small village of Pyrgela, on the outskirts of his hometown of Argos in Nemea of northeastern Peloponnese. After studying oenology in Dijon (Burgundy), George had a long-standing vision to create a winery in his homeland with the goal of producing high-quality wines - a vision that was realized in 1986.

Today, Domaine Skouras resides in the highlands of Argolida, within the village of Malandreni in Nemea. The ultra-modern winery was built in 2004 in the Nemea winegrowing zone, which is Greece's largest and possibly the most exciting Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for red wines. The new facility offered greater capacity and cutting-edge infrastructure, and was carefully designed to preserve the authenticity and identity of the wines. The winery is situated among vineyards in an area that is blessed with ideal conditions for viticulture, especially for the indigenous Agiorgitiko.

The family-owned winery continues to be energetically and passionately run by George and his wife, Ourania. They are also joined by their son and daughter, Dimitris and Stella, respectively, who share their vision for the Domaine. Dimitris studied Viticulture and Oenology in France, while Stella is a graduate of Economics and Marketing studies in Scotland.

At Domaine Skouras, the philosophy is based on every wine expressing a clear and consistent philosophy, which is distilled into four key principles: purity, varietal clarity, expression of the mesoclimate, true reflection of the terroir. The vineyard team works to produce exceptional grapes with an unwavering and uncompromising dedication, and constant observation. Technology, for the Skouras team, is simply a tool for precision and control, as true winemaking happens with minimal intervention, and by respecting the grape, the land, and the passage of time.

This red wine is crafted with 100% Agiorgitiko that was grown at their vineyard in Corinthia at the high altitude of 3,412 feet (1,039 metres), from vines averaging 30 years old and planted on red clay soils rich in minerals. The vineyard was first planted in 1970, while the first vintage for this wine was 1989. After harvesting the grapes in October, they arrived at the winery and underwent alcoholic fermentation and extraction in stainless steel vats, with post-fermentation extraction occurring for 14 days. This was followed by full malolactic fermentation in oak barriques. The wine was matured for 12 months in new French barriques, with 4 of these months in the presence of light lees, then underwent further maturation in bottle for 6 months in their cellar prior to release. Domaine Skouras Grande Cuvée Agiorgitiko 2022 (92 pts)

Tasting Note:

DOMAINE SKOURAS GRANDE CUVÉE AGIORGITIKO 2022 - PDO Nemea, Greece (#94706) (XD) - $42.95
The medium+ intensity nose takes some coaxing to reveal plummy, raspberry, and blackberry aromas with a sheen of woody oak, followed by minerals, savoury earth, and dark red berries. The medium+ to medium-full bodied palate is dry with ripe plum, raspberry, cherry, sandalwood, dark red berry, mineral, and spice flavours supported by fresh, crisp, and lively acidity. The mid-palate is crunchy with fine-grained and well-structured tannins. There's some youthful grip on the back-palate. Savoury, smoky, and stony mineral notes linger on the long, crisp finish. Enjoyable now, but will be even better after a few years in the cellar. Highly recommended buy! Score: 92 pts

Boutari The Authentic Assyrtiko 2023 (Greece) - Wine Review

white wine review is a lovely Assyrtiko from Macedonia in Northern Greece. It is a brand new arrival at the LCBO, landing in Ontario as part of the recent LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection.

It is produced by renowned, highly-respected, and historic Boutari wine company that was established in 1879 by Ioannis Boutaris in Naoussa, Macedonia, in Northern Greece. As one of Greece's most influential wineries, Ioannis built Naoussa's first privately-owned winery and retail cellar in 1906, while also launching the production of the first Greek red wine that was bottled under the now-renowned "Naoussa Boutari" label.

The Boutari family wine business has been passed down along family lines since its founding, with Stelios Boutaris, son of Ioannis, taking over the reins in the mid-1930s and laying down the foundation for years to come. In 1968, the two sons of Stelios - Giannis and Konstantinos Boutaris - took over the winery and ventured into vine growing by purchasing a vineyard in Imathia. Together, the brothers propelled the family business to new heights and shaping it into what it is today. In 1978, Boutari inaugurated their new, state-of-the-art winery in Stenimachos, Naoussa, a facility which would go on to become their flagship winery as the centre of production, bottling, and ageing.

Boutari continued to grow and expand during the 1980s, while also highlighting Greece's various unique wine regions and vine-growing qualities. During this period, Boutari also experimented with the cultivation of Greek and international varieties to create a series of experimental wines, some of which are mainstays in the current portfolio. Boutari has garnered many accolades over the years, including being named European Winery of the Year in 2008 by Wine Enthusiast. In 2022, a new chapter began in the story of Boutari wineries as Elias and Thomas Georgiadis became key investors with a promise to preserve the heritage and further develop the Boutari name, while also continuing the long tradition of Boutari wineries.

This particular white wine is from their Varieties range - wines which are crafted with passion and love from the main wine producing regions of Greece. This white wine is crafted with 100% Assyrtiko that was grown in the mountainous areas of Florina and Pieria, in Macedonia of Northern Greece. The fruit was cultivated with a particular focus on low yields, and the timing of harvest in each vineyard was determined using a combination of both berry testing and analytical data. The grapes were harvested at the time of the day when temperatures were the lowest possible, and underwent strict manual sorting upon arriving at the winery. Completely vinified in tanks, the grapes underwent alcoholic fermentation at controlled temperatures using selected yeast strains, followed by stirring the fine lees post-fermentation until the wine was bottled.

The growing season in Northern Greece in 2023 began very dry, with an almost warm winter, followed by a nice, cold spring. There were some challenges due to a very wet June, along with heatwaves that stressed the vines in July. However, warm days and cool nights during harvest saved the vintage. Boutari The Authentic Assyrtiko 2023 (90+ pts)

BOUTARI THE AUTHENTIC ASSYRTIKO 2023 - PGI Macedonia, Greece (#44246) (XD) - $21.95
Fresh and lifted, the medium-high intensity nose wafts of lemon, grapefruit, citrus, herbs, floral blossom, and apple aromas with leesy mineral accents adding further complexity. The medium+ to medium-full bodied palate is dry, ripe, and gently honeyed with lemon, grapefruit, apple, blossom, leesy mineral, and spice flavours. It has fine, well-balanced acidity and a pleasing, textural mouthfeel on the mid-palate. Leesy mineral notes are more prominent on the back palate and carry through to the long, savoury mineral finish. A highly recommended buy that is ideal with seafood. Score: 90+ pts

Atlantis White 2024 (Santorini) - Wine Review

white wine review is a lovely white wine from Santorini that is primarily crafted with Assyrtiko. It arrived at the LCBO in last month's LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection.

It is produced by Estate Argyros, the premier and largest private vineyard owner on the island of Santorini, Greece. While Estate Argyros was formally established in 1903 by Georgios Argyros, the Argyros family had been involved in wine production for decades prior to that.

Since the beginning, the Argyros family has focused on both vine growing and winemaking based on a deep understanding that great grapes are always a prerequisite for great wines. Each generation has contributed to the development of Estate Argyros wines on both fronts. In 1974, Yiannis Argyros, the third generation of the family, took hold of Estate Argyros and propelled it to one of the world's wine-producing elite. Yiannis worked tirelessly for more than three decades to prove that his Vinsantos are some of the finest, rarest sweet wines in the world, and was also instrumental in proving that the dry Assyrtikos of Santorini can be sublime and age worthy.

Today, Estate Argyros is led by Matthaios Argyros, son of Yiannis, and a fourth generation wine grower. Matthaios took over the estate in 2004 and was the driving force behind the establishment of a new winery and further acquisitions of vineyard land. Matthaios travels abroad often to not only promote the wines of Estate Argyrosling, but also to see the great vineyards and taste the finest wines from around the globe. Matthaios is very detail-oriented and his depth of knowledge of the Santorini vineyard guarantees that the future of the Estate is in safe hands.

The new Estate Argyros Winery was inaugurated in 2015 in Episkopi, in south-central Santorini. With modern, cutting-edge technology, the 3,000 m² winery is one of the most impressive on the island. There was great emphasis placed on the production facilities to ensure that every stage of the winemaking process could be handled with both maximum control and minimum intervention. The winery was designed with true respect to the Santorini landscape, while also being environmentally friendly and energy efficient.

At Estate Argyros, the philosophy is based on working with almost exclusively old vines because only these vineyards can provide the depth, the definition, and the concentration needed to produce the desired style of wine. They undertake meticulous work in the vineyard, while the timing of harvest is carefully determined, plot-by-plot, in order to pick at optimum ripeness. In the cellar, as an artisan producer, Estate Argyros crafts small quantities of top-quality wines. Each plot is harvested, vinified, and aged separately, then blended only at the very late stages of production. The vines of Estate Argyros are farmed organically, without any pesticides. Vineyard work is done manually, except for plowing, which is carried out by mules, and the vines are not irrigated.

This white wine is a blend of 90% Assyrtiko, 5% Athiri, and 5% Aidani that was grown on the volcanic island of Santorini. The grapes were harvested in the first ten days of August from vines averaging 10 to 30 years old. After bringing the grapes to the winery, they were fermented in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 16–18°C for almost three weeks, and then matured for six months (on its lees?) in stainless steel vats.

The 2024 growing season in Santorini began with a mild winter with 153 mm of rainfall, followed by a spring that featured higher-than-average temperatures and 55 mm of rainfall. Summer continued with drought and "meltemia" (strong, dry, and northerly winds) conditions, and the result was a harvest that began on the 2nd of August. Yields were slightly below average, while grape quality was very good. Let's see how this 2024 white wine from Santorini is tasting tonight...

Enclosed by Stelvin screw cap, this blend of 90% Assyrtiko, 5% Athiri, and 5% Aidani has a lifted nose of medium-high intensity that is crisp and tangy with lovely lemon citrus, flinty mineral, white floral, ripe apple, and pear aromas, plus touches of spice. The dry, medium+ bodied palate has good weight and concentration, with ripe flavours of lemon citrus, apple, spice, flinty mineral, and white floral supported by fresh, vibrant, and zesty acidity. It has a finely textured mouthfeel on the mid-palate, while lemon citrus, apple, spice, and mineral notes linger through to the long and well-balanced finish. This recommended buy is ideal with seafood or vegetarian fare. Score: 90+ pts

Kir-Yianni Single Vineyard Ramnista Xinomavro 2020 (Greece) - Wine Review

red wine review is an excellent, vegan-certified Single Vineyard Xinomavro that made its debut at the LCBO as part of the feature on Greek wines in last month's LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection on .

It is produced by Kir-Yianni, a renowned Greek winery that was founded in 1997 by Yiannis Boutaris (1942-2024), a leading figure in the Greek wine industry. Yiannis started his own project after leaving his family's premium wine company, Boutari Wine Group, which was established by his grandfather in 1879.

Today, Kir-Yianni is led by Yiannis' son, Stellios Boutaris, a fifth generation winemaker of the Boutaris family. Stellios became Managing Director of Kir-Yianni in 1999, and was joined by his brother, Mihalis, a few years later after completing his studies at UC Davis. Stellios leads Kir-Yianni into the next phase of its history with a philosophy based on a desire for innovation, respect for tradition, and true knowledge and character of the wine. Sustainability is also a core philosophy and vital business decision at Kir-Yianni. In November 2022, Kir-Yianni set up a "Sustainability Team" and began their journey to carbon neutrality.

Winegrowing in Naoussa, in northern Greece, has a long history dating back to the 16th century. From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, the vine was the main crop in the area. Xinomavro was the main varietal planted in vineyards in Naoussa, and trained in gobelet style and planted in dense rows. Today, Naoussa is one of the most prominent wine-producing regions of Greece, with over 500 hectares under vine.

In 1970, Yiannis planted 40 hectares of Xinomavro vines on the eastern foothills of Mount Vermion, in Yianakohori, near the town of Naoussa. These first Xinomavro plantings signalled the revival of the ancient Naoussa vineyard and paved the way for the production of terroir wines, which has revolutionized the Greek winemaking scene in recent years. This vineyard would go on to become Ktima Kir-Yianni in Naoussa, and the fruit from these vines is what goes into crafting this Ramnista Xinomavro.

This red wine is crafted with 100% Xinomavro that was grown in the PDO Naoussa appellation of northern Greece. The wine's name is "Ramnista", a local idiom that stands for "royal hill", and portrays the trademark rolling hills of Kir-Yianni's estate vineyard in Naoussa. The "Ramnista blocks" are the source of Xinomavro grapes for this wine. Only the best parcels from the various blocks were selected for this wine, and the primary blocks for the 2020 vintage were #8, #12, #13, #14, #15, #16 and #17, #18, and #20. Nearly all of these blocks were planted in 1970 and 1971, on gentle slopes, with exposure to the sun running the gamut from northeast to south to northwest. The vines were trained using the Double Cordon system, and planted on loamy soils consisting mostly of sand and some clay.

To craft this wine, the grapes were hand-harvested with strict selection during the first week of October. After further rigorous grape selection on the conveyor belt, the grapes were cold-soaked for 7 days at low temperatures. It was fermented with pigeage (punch downs) for 10–15 days and pump-overs in a combination of large French oak vats and stainless steel tanks at a temperature of 19-23°C that is preserved during the 2- to 6-day post-fermentation maceration. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. It was matured for 16 months in 225 L and 500 L French oak, in a combination of first-, second-, and third-use barrels. The first blending took place on the 6th month of maturation, while the final blend was crafted just before bottling.

The 2020 growing season will be remembered for many things. In Greece, it began with a mild winter with very low to low rain, and typical seasonal temperatures. There was notable rain, sometimes intense, along with cooler than average nighttime temperatures from April to June, along with intense rainfall that was beneficial to the plants in mid-July. Heavy precipitation at the beginning of August was the last of the season, giving way to a long period of hot and dry conditions, with significant diurnal temperature ranges until harvest. From an uneven year with very good quality for red wines, let's see how this 2020 Xinomavro is tasting tonight...

The medium+ to medium-high intensity nose takes some coaxing to reveal attractive aromas of ripe red berry, Bing cherry, sweet baking spices, dried herbs and savoury earth, plus accents of orange adding further intrigue. The medium+ bodied palate is dry and structured with complex and ripe flavours of red cherry, red plum, fine sweet spices, dried herbs, savoury oak, plus orange touches. It has fresh and juicy acidity, along with well-structured and somewhat grippy tannins. Savoury earth and smoky mineral notes linger on the long, textured finish. Highly recommended buy! Score: 92+ pts

Skouras Wild Ferment Assyrtiko 2024 (Greece) - Wine Review

white wine review is the latest vintage of a consistently excellent, and now vegan-certified, Assyrtiko that landed at the LCBO in the LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection. It is featured as a wine to 'Arrive in Style', as well as part of the fantastic mini-feature on wines from Greece.

It is produced by Domaine Skouras, a well-respected and highly-regarded winery situated in the highlands of Argolida, within the village of Malandreni in Nemea, in northeastern Peloponnese, just a few kilometres from Argos. Founder George Skouras was born and raised in Argos, studied oenology in Dijon (Burgundy), and had a long-standing vision to create a winery in his homeland. The original Skouras winery was founded in 1986 within the small village of Pyrgela, on the outskirts of Argos, and the goal from the beginning was clear - to produce high-quality wines.

The ultra-modern winery of Domaine Skouras was built in 2004 and resides in the Nemea winegrowing zone, Greece's largest and possibly the most exciting Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for red wines in Greece. The winery is situated among vineyards in an area that is blessed with ideal conditions for viticulture, especially for the indigenous Agiorgitiko. George and his wife, Ourania, energetically continue their passion and vision for the Domaine, and are now also joined at the winery by their two children. Dimitris, their son, studied Viticulture and Oenology in France, while Stella, their daughter, is a graduate of Economics and Marketing studies in Scotland.

The Skouras team uses technology as a tool only for precision and control, as their belief is that true winemaking happens with minimal intervention by always respecting the grape, the land, and the passage of time. At Skouras, every wine is expressed with a clear and consistent philosophy that is based on purity, varietal clarity, expression of the mesoclimate, and true reflection of the terroir. With this philosophy in mind, the vineyard team at Skouras works with an unwavering dedication and constant observation that is driven by a single, uncompromising goal: to produce exceptional grapes. It is the belief, truthfully, that only from outstanding fruit can a truly great wine be made. Each bottle of Skouras wine carries the signature of its creator — wines that are intense, energetic, and complex, and always expressed with elegance, grace, and finesse.

Like the 2023 Skouras Wild Ferment Assyrtiko I enjoyed last year, this is also 100% Assyrtiko. The grapes were grown in Nemea, in northeastern Peloponnese, at 620 metres above sea level, on mainly red clay soil, with vines averaging 11 years old. After harvesting the grapes in September, they were whole-bunch pressed, then underwent wild yeast fermentation in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 15°C. The wine was aged sur lie for 4 months, and did not undergo malolactic fermentation.

The 2024 growing season in the Peloponnese peninsula was warm with reduced yields. However, grape quality is high. Let's see how this 2024 Assyrtiko from the Peloponnese is tasting tonight...

Lovely, ripe, medium-high intensity nose has impressive depth and complexity with a fine mix of flinty minerality, lemon citrus, ripe apple, quince, pear, leesy, and yellow fruits, plus accents of white melon and floral blossom. The dry, medium-full bodied palate has very good structure and ripe flavours of lemon peel, citrus, apple, pear, flinty mineral, white melon, and blossom flavours in a slightly honeyed profile. It has fresh, well-balanced acidity, along with impressive structure on the mid-palate. Flinty minerals, lemon citrus, and apple notes with a touch of spice on the long, savoury, and slightly textured finish. Must buy! Score: 91 pts

August 16, 2025 LCBO VINTAGES Release Wine Picks: Summer Smart Buys + Greece

LCBO Wine Picks: August 16, 2025 VINTAGES New Release Collection
Here are my top wine picks from the August 16, 2025 LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection, with digital edition here. The feature story of the release is titled "Summer Smart Buys", while the mini-feature focuses on the exciting wines from Greece. In all, there are 105 products included in this release, with a whopping 25 - nearly a quarter of the release - as Online & Flagship Exclusives (OFE). Overall, this is a very good release, with a relatively high number of OFE wines as recommended buys, while the number of quality red wines below $20 continues to dwindle. All the wines should already be available for purchase online and in-store.

We'll start with the feature story of the release - Summer Smart Buys - which includes 23 wines, most of which are under $20, and nearly all are under $25. There are five recommended Smart Buys among my top wine picks, and at the top of the list is a wine from McLaren Vale that is composed of 70% Grenache and 30% Mataro (aka Mourvèdre). The other reds are a Ventoux from Rhône that is a blend of 40% Syrah, 40% Grenache, and 20% Carignan, as well as a Merlot from Niagara. Smart white wine buys are the Chenin Blanc from South Africa, and a Chardonnay from Argentina.

The mini-thematic features the exciting wines from Greece. Once again, the mini-theme is small with only four wines included in the topic, but three are among my top recommendations. The lone red is an excellent Single Vineyard Xinomavro, while the whites are a Malagouzia from Evia (Central Greece) and an Assyrtiko from the Peloponnese. Other Greek highlights in the release include a trio of wines from Santorini - a couple of which are world-class Assyrtikos, as well as the Atlantis White, which is a blend of 90% Assyrtiko, 5% Athiri, and 5% Aidani.

Among my top wine picks, the OFEs lead the way once with a trio of fantastic wines. First up is a Super Tuscan that is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, followed by a couple of wines crafted with Gamay - one from Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the other from the Morgon cru in Beaujolais. Other wines from Tuscany include a Brunello di Montalcino that is straight Sangiovese, while the Riserva Chianti Classico is the Wine of the Month and is mainly Sangiovese. From Veneto, the Valpolicella is a blend of 55% Corvina, 25% Corvinone, and 20% Rondinella, while the Roussillon-Villages from France is composed of Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah. And lastly, there is a fine Cabernet Franc from Niagara.

Most of the white wines from the main release are actually OFEs, starting with the Old Vines blend from South Africa that is composed of 68% Chenin Blanc, 14% Clairette Blanche, 6% Sémillon Gris, 6% Grenache Blanc, and 6% Viognier. Other white wine OFEs are the Saint-Joseph Rhône white which is actually Marsanne, the off-dry Pinot Gris from New Zealand, and the dry Gewürztraminer from Alto Adige in Italy. The only other recommended white is from Costières de Nîmes, and it is a blend of 50% Grenache Blanc, 30% Roussanne, and 20% Clairette.

Mega Spileo Assyrtiko 2023 (Greece) - Wine Review

white wine review is the latest vintage of a perennially lovely Assyrtiko from Greece. It arrived at the LCBO last month as part of the feature on BBQ Wines in the LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection.

It is produced by the historic and significant winery and monastery - Mega Spileo Estate. The roots of Mega Spileo go back to 362 A.D., when it was established by brothers who were also monks. Mega Spileo is situated near the town of Kalavryta, in the Achaea region of northern Peloponnese, and holds a special place in Greek orthodox tradition and history.

Vine cultivation was added to the lands surrounding the monastery in approximately the mid-15th century, and the grapes were used by the monks to produce wine for both the Holy Communion and as a nutritious dietary supplement. A massive barrel called "Angelis" was acquired during this period and was used to store 12 tonnes of wine - a barrel which still survives to this day.

Today, the long and storied history of Mega Spileo Estate lies in the hands of brothers Giannis and Theodoros Anastasiou, who received a long-term lease on the Estate from the Monastery in 1999. Their vision was to revitalize the historical vineyard using a team of experienced oenologists and wine producers in order to create a completely new and unique estate. The team at Mega Spileo re-planted the vines and implemented best practices in the vineyard and winery. Among their practices include protecting the environment and using sustainable agricultural techniques.

The modern winery of Mega Spileo Estate resides a few minutes away from the historic monastery, within the UNESCO Chelmos-Vouraikos Global Geopark that covers an area of 647 sq. km. The area surrounding the Estate has tall mountains, plateaus, sheer gorges, ancient trees, wild herbs, flowers, and cool breezes, all of which come together to create a unique micro-climate that is ideal for the cultivation of grape vines. By cultivating high-quality grapes, which in turn results in high-quality wines, Mega Spileo has become a significant point of reference in Greek wine production.

Like the 2022 Mega Spileo Assyrtiko I enjoyed last year, this white wine is 100% Assyrtiko that was grown at a relatively high elevation of more than 700 metres above sea level in the mountain vineyards of Aigialeia and Kalavryta. It is classified as PGI Achaia, a winegrowing area that lies on a strip of land between the Ionian Sea to the west and the Patraic and Corinthian Gulfs to the north, on the northwest coast of the Peloponnese. After harvesting the grapes in late-September, it underwent static racking of the grape must after 48 hours. The grapes were fermented with selected yeasts at low temperatures and stayed in contact with its fine lees for 3 months in stainless steel tanks. It was aged mostly in tanks, with a third of the wine matured in oak barrels for an additional 3 months.

Although the 2023 growing season reduced yields, the warm vintage produced grapes of high quality. Let's see how this 2023 Assyrtiko from Greece is tasting tonight...

Elegant, medium-high intensity aromatics deliver lovely ripe lemon citrus and stony-leesy mineral aromas nuanced with melon, stone fruits, apple, and touches of mealy notes. The mid-weighted palate is dry, ripe, and lightly honeyed with delicious lemon citrus, spice, apple, and mineral flavours buoyed fresh and lively acidity. It has good structure on the mid-palate, while citrusy, spice, and savoury mineral notes carry you through to the long, crisp finish. Highly recommended buy! Score: 90 pts

Skouras Cuvée Prestige Agiorgitiko / Moscofilero Rosé 2024 (Greece) - Wine Review

After enjoying the lovely 2023 Skouras Cuvée Prestige Agiorgitiko / Moscofilero Rosé last year, rosé wine review is the latest vintage of this terrific wine that arrived at the LCBO earlier this month as part of the feature story on Mediterranean wines in the LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection.

It is produced by the well-respected Domaine Skouras, a winery that was founded in 1986 by George Skouras. George was born in the Peloponnese town of Argos, one of Europe's oldest towns and one with a rich, 3,000-year-old tradition of wine and culture. After completing his studies that began in agriculture and finished with a degree in Oenology in Burgundy, George gained his experience in the classic wine-producing regions of France before returning home to realize the dream of having his own winery.

Initially, he set up his winery in the small village of Pyrgela, on the outskirts of Argos, then eventually moved to Nemea in the northeastern Peloponnese. It was in Nemea where he gained invaluable lessons about Agiorgitiko and the Nemea appellation. Today, Domaine Skouras is situated in the highlands of Argolida, an area that is blessed with ideal winegrowing conditions, particularly for Agiorgitiko.

The ultra-modern winery of Domaine Skouras helps fulfill their winemaking philosophy that focuses on purity, varietal clarity, tracing of the region's mesoclimate, and imprint of the terroir. The viticultural team at Skouras has only one aim: to achieve optimum ripeness and obtain the best possible grape. With a belief that the better the fruit, the better the wine, the wines of Domaine Skouras consistently show the hallmarks of their creator with intensity, vibrancy, and complexity, and all is expressed with elegance, grace, and nobility. Domaine Skouras' wines are engraved with the character of their terroir.

Like the previous vintage, the 2024 vintage is also composed of 70% Agiorgitiko and 30% Moscofilero and grown in the Peloponnese wine region of Greece. The Agiorgitiko was grown in Corinthia at an elevation of 850 metres above sea level on calcareous soil, while the Moscofilero was grown in Mantinia at an elevation of 750 metres above sea level on sandy soil. The average age of the Agiorgitiko vines is 29 years, while the average age of the Moscofilero vines is 31 years. After harvesting the grapes from the end of September to the beginning of October, the Moscofilero underwent skin contact for 6 hours at 16°C, and was then blended and co-fermented with the Agiorgitiko in stainless steel vats at the same controlled temperature of 16°C. The wine was aged on its fine lees for a short period of time and then bottled and enclosed by screw cap.

Blend of 70% Agiorgitiko and 30% Moscofilero and enclosed by screw cap. Enticing with an attractive, complex, and medium-high to highly aromatic nose of citrus, grapefruit, blood orange, floral, red berry, currant, raspberry, and cherry notes. Quite full and weighty on the dry palate with delicious citrus, grapefruit, red berry, raspberry, currant, and blood orange flavours nuanced with gentle spice. It has very good, crisp, juicy, and slightly tangy acidity. Citrus and red berry flavours are joined by touches of leesy minerals on the finish, with very good length. Highly recommended buy! Score: 89 pts

LCBO Wine Picks: July 5, 2025 VINTAGES New Release Collection
Here are my top wine picks from the July 5, 2025 LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection (flipbook here), which highlights Mediterranean Wines for Summer Sipping as the feature story of the release. The mini-thematic features three wines from Austria's historic Winzer Krems, while in Local Talent there is a stellar lineup of Cool Chardonnays. In all, there are 90 wines included in this release, with almost an equal number of red- and white-coloured wines, and everything should be available for purchase by this Saturday, if not already in many stores.

We'll begin with the feature story of the release, which lists twelve Mediterranean wines for Summer Sipping - five of which are included among my top wine picks. Up first are a couple of white wines from Sicily - an Etna Bianco crafted with 100% Carricante, as well as a Grillo. The other three wines are all rosés, including a couple of blends from Provence in France, with the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault. The other rosé is from Greece and a blend of 70% Agiorgitiko and 30% Moscofilero.

The red wines in this release felt a bit like slim pickings, with only nine recommendations coming from just four countries. We'll start in France with the Gigondas, which is majority Grenache, with Syrah completing the cuvée, while the Bordeaux red is 100% Merlot. From Italy, the Vino Nobile is Sangiovese, while the Chianti Classico is a blend of 90% Sangiovese, 5% Malvasia Nera, and 5% Colorino. From Argentina there is a straight Malbec, while the other wine is mainly Cabernet Sauvignon. Spain has three recommendations in this release, with both Riojas crafted with 100% Tempranillo, while the Navarra red is 100% Graciano.

Among my top white wine picks, Cool Chardonnay is the place to start with a quartet of lovely 2022 vintage Chardonnays from Ontario - three from the Benchlands in Niagara and one from Prince Edward County. Tasting the four of these side-by-side would be a lovely exercise for the studious types (or a Saturday evening!). There are two blends among my white wine recommendations - the Côtes du Rhône Blanc is composed of 50% Grenache Blanc, 40% Viognier, and 10% Marsanne, while the South African white is mainly Chenin Blanc blended with Roussanne, Viognier, and Sémillon. Among the mono-varietal wines, there is a Sauvignon Blanc from Margaret River in Australia, the Torrontés from the high-altitudes of Salta in Argentina, as well as the slightly off-dry Riesling from Austria. Lastly, the Orange Wine from Chile is crafted with Torontel.

My lone rosé pick (that wasn't part of the Mediterranean feature) is from New Zealand, and it is a somewhat quirky blend of 48% Pinot Gris, 48% Chenin Blanc, and 4% Pinot Noir.
