Domaine Skouras Cuvée Prestige Agiorgitiko / Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 (Greece) - Wine Review

Happy New Year! For red wine review, I'm starting off the new year with this terrific Smart Buy from Greece that is a brand-new arrival in this Saturday's LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection on - and already widely available for purchase across Ontario.

Like the excellent 2023 Skouras Wild Ferment Assyrtiko that I enjoyed a couple of months ago, this red wine is produced by Domaine Skouras, a well-known winery based in the Nemea wine region that is dedicated to producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of Greece.

Domaine Skouras was established in 1986 by George Skouras in the small village of Pyrgela, on the outskirts of the city of Argos, in the Peloponnese peninsula of southern Greece. He established the winery in his homeland following his studies in oenology in Dijon, Burgundy. George then created a boutique winery in the village of Gymno, in northeastern Peloponnese, within the Nemea appellation, where he performed countless hours of manual work on a minuscule scale, while learning invaluable lessons about the Agiorgitiko variety and the Nemea denomination.

Today, Domaine Skouras is located in the highlands of Argolida, within the village of Malandreni in Nemea, in northeastern Peloponnese, just a few kilometres from Argos. Established in 2004, this ultra-modern winemaking facility is situated among vineyards in an area that is blessed with ideal winegrowing conditions, particularly Agiorgitiko. The facility was designed to ensure proper and thorough procedures of the highest standards in all aspects from wine production to bottling to ageing, while also offering a first-class experience for visitors. George and his wife, Ourania, continue to work at the winery and are joined by their two children - Dimitris and Stella. Dimitris studied Viticulture and Oenology in France, while Stella is a graduate of Economics and Marketing studies in Scotland.

The philosophy at Skouras that permeates through each step from vineyard to bottle is reflected in the words: purity, varietal clarity, tracing of the region's mesoclimate, and the imprint of the terroir. Everyone in the team at Skouras works, observes, supervises, acts and reacts, advises and consults with the goal of achieving optimum ripeness and obtaining the best possible grape. The premise behind this goal is that the better the fruit, the better the wine. With better fruit, Skouras wines show all the hallmarks of their creator with intensity, vibrancy, and complexity, characteristics which are expressed with elegance, grace, and nobility. In Domaine Skouras, the wines are engraved with the character of their terroir.

This red wine is crafted using 90% Agiorgitiko and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, with both grapes grown in the winegrowing region of Nemea. It would have been classified as PDO Nemea, Greece's most important appellation, if it was 100% Agiorgitiko, but is instead classified as the regional appellation of PGI Peloponnese. The Agiorgitiko was harvested in the middle of September from 26-year-old vines grown in clay soil at 650 metres above sea level, while the Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested at the end of August from 21-year-old vines grown in sandy soil at 500 metres above sea level. To vinify this wine, the grapes underwent alcoholic fermentation and extraction in stainless steel vats at 23˚C for 6 days, followed by full malolactic fermentation in vats, and short ageing on its fine lees.

The growing season in Greece 2023 proved to be somewhat challenging as it was a warm vintage, with water scarcity and the prevalence of downy mildew, conditions which resulted in reduced yields. However, the quality of this vintage is promising and looks high indeed. Let's see how this 2023 Greek red wine is tasting tonight...

Enclosed by screw cap, this unoaked blend of 90% Agiorgitiko and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon has a fruity, medium-high intensity nose that delivers ripe red & black berry, cranberry, black cherry, mulberry, and brambly aromas with hints of spice, and dried herbs adding savoury complexity. It has good weight on the medium-full bodied and dry palate with delicious ripe red & black berry, cran-cherry, plum, and dried herb flavours with touches of stony minerality. Quite savoury on the mid-palate, along with fresh, juicy acidity. Tannins are smooth, refined, and lightly structured. It's nicely balanced and harmonious throughout with plummy berry notes tapering to savoury minerals on the lengthy, gently grippy finish. Really well-made and a smart buy! Score: 89 pts

January 4, 2025 LCBO VINTAGES Release Wine Picks: Smart Buys

LCBO Wine Picks: January 4, 2025 VINTAGES New Release Collection
Happy New Year! Here's my top wine picks from the first release of the year, which is always the annual Smart Buys Release, where most of the wines are priced at under $20. In this release, 52 of the 74 wines are less than $20. Interestingly, the average price of a bottle is just north of $21, including HST. All the wines in this release should be available for purchase by Saturday, with many on shelves already. Please note that the prices indicated below include HST, which will be deducted when purchasing in-store, while the prices on lcbo.com have already deducted the HST.

We'll begin with the feature story that is titled "Smart Buys" and includes thirty wines, which represents surprisingly 40% of the Release. Five wines, of which four are red, are among my top wine recommendations from this Release, with the only blend a red wine from Greece that is composed of 90% Agiorgitiko and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The other wines are a Syrah from Hawke's Bay, a Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra, and the 2019 Chianti Classico Annata that is made with 100% Sangiovese. The lone white "Smart Buy" is a delicious Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand.

Among my top red wine picks, the Riserva Chianti Classico is a blend of 92% Sangiovese, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Merlot, while the red from Jumilla, Spain, is composed of 85% Monastrell and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Côtes du Rhône is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, while the red from California is also mainly Grenache (61%) with 20% Syrah, 15% Cinsault, and 4% Petite Sirah completing the blend. The last red blend is from Costières de Nîmes, and it is crafted with 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache. Among the mono-varietal reds, there are a couple of wines from Chile - a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Carmenère. And lastly, the red wine from Beaujolais is a Gamay from 40-year-old vines.

There are two blends among my top white wine picks from this Release. The Creekside wine from Niagara is a 50/50 blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, while the Chilean white is composed of 94% Chardonnay and 6% Roussanne. Mono-varietal dry white wines include the Muscadet from Loire, which is made using the Melon varietal, and the Verdicchio from Marche. If you enjoy sweeter wines, either Riesling from Mosel or Niagara will delight.

Palmer Brut Réserve Champagne (France) - Wine Review

Just in time for year-end celebrations, sparkling wine review is a beautiful, non-vintage Champagne that is brand-new to the LCBO, arriving as part of the recent LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection as an Online & Flagship Exclusive.

It is produced by Palmer & Co., a prestigious Champagne house that was established in 1947 by seven families who were also growers that owned prized Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims region of Champagne. These seven families shared a desire for perfection and had a vision to create a Champagne house known for its passion and pursuit of excellence, and wines with harmony and balance, qualities that still define the Champagne Palmer style today.

Palmer & Co represents a true search for harmony and balance that was initiated by the 7 founding winegrowers. Today, Champagne Palmer has become a house of reference and is well-prepared for the challenges of tomorrow. Palmer & Co is able to distinguish itself through its grands terroirs of Montagne de Reims, where all of its vineyards are classified as Premier Cru or Grand Cru. This non-vintage Champagne by Palmer & Co. is the flagship wine of the house. Blend of 51% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, and 19% Pinot Meunier, with 22% reserve wine that was bottled Jan. 22, 2019, aged on its lees for 4 years, and disgorged on Feb. 20, 2023. Lot L23131C. Rich and elegantly fragrant, the medium-high to highly aromatic nose has a lovely, complex mix of biscuit, toasty, brioche, autolytic, lemon citrus, and pear/apple aromas, plus leesy mineral accents. The mid-weighted palate is crisp and refreshing with lovely autolytic, lemon citrus, brioche, toasty, pear, and apple replays on the flavour profile. It has an elegant mouthfeel with crisp acidity and a fine bead of bubbles. Harmonious and well-balanced throughout with fine citrus, toasty, and leesy mineral notes joined by white florals on the long, crisp, and elegant finish. Highly recommended buy! Score: 93 pts

Blu Giovello Prosecco (Italy) - Wine Review (Dec. 2024)

For celebrations, I opened up this delicious, crowd-pleasing Prosecco DOC from Italy that is readily available at the LCBO and currently on promotion at $2 off until the beginning of .

Blu Giovello is a wine brand that was created many years ago and is now produced by Gruppo Martellozzo Srl, a wine producer with a long history dating back to the end of the 19th century. The name Blu Giovello comes from two things: Blu refers to its Italian origins and is represented by its blue skies and the waves of the Mediterranean Sea, while Giovello is a combination of the Italian words Giovane (young) and Bello (beautiful). Blu Giovello was created with the aim of combining the freshness of elegant and fragrant wines with the seduction of unconventional colours and shapes, ending with each bottle of Blu Giovello wine packaged in a strikingly transparent blue bottle.

The dragonfly in flight is the brand's logo and is prominently displayed on each Blu Giovello bottle of wine, while symbolizing harmony and prosperity. The creator of Blu Giovello wanted to bring all the lightness, joy, and elegance of the dragonfly together as an invitation to celebrate life and freedom from conventions. The wines of Blu Giovello are light and carefree, just like a dragonfly in flight, with the scents of Blu Giovello wines combining with any occasion for conviviality, with the blue bottles evoking the blue of the sea and the rivers that bathe the land from which the grapes come from, as well as the blue skies of Italy.

This Prosecco D.O.C. Extra Dry Spumante is crafted in the Charmat method using 100% Glera that was grown on Morainic soil at 400 metres above sea level. The vines were trained using the Guyot system. After harvesting the grapes in the first half of September, the grapes were lightly pressed and then fermented using selected yeast at a controlled temperature of 15°C – 16°C. It underwent secondary fermentation with selected yeast in a small tank for two months at a low temperature.

After last enjoying a previous bottling of this Blu Giovello Prosecco back in May 2023, let's see how this Prosecco is tasting...

100% Glera. Faint aromas of lemon citrus, pear, orchard fruit, and a whiff of white floral rise out of the glass. The mid-weighted palate is off-dry and flavourful with delicious lemon citrus, pear, white floral, and white peach notes, plus touches of nectarine, leesy minerality, and spice. Acids are crisp, clean, and vibrant alongside effervescent mousse. More leesy mineral and savoury on the crisp finish, with good length. Score: 87 pts

Vallepicciola Chianti Classico 2021 (Tuscany) - Wine Review

On Christmas Eve, red wine review is an excellent Sangiovese from the Chianti Classico wine region that is a brand-new arrival at the LCBO and landed on shelves (and online) as part of the recent LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection.

It is produced by Vallepicciola, a family-run winery that was born from the love of Chianti Classico and brought to life in the late 1990s after the Bolfo family restored the ruins of an old monastery located in the picturesque countryside of the village of Pievasciata. This village is located within the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, at the southern end of Chianti Classico, in the province of Siena. The Bolfo family transformed this monastery and its vineyards with love and care to give rise to the 5-star Hotel Le Fontanelle.

Today, Vallepicciola is a 265-hectare property, where centuries-old woods intertwine with more than 4,000 olive trees, alongside 107 hectares of vines that are skilfully cultivated. The unique vines with their own precious history are planted to Sangiovese and five international varieties. This single piece of land in the sinuous hills of Castelnuovo Berardenga is divided into 9 contiguous, but unique areas, based on its soil characteristics and exposure to the sun, and is accordingly planted with the most suitable varieties in each plot of land.

The philosophy at Vallepicciola is of life that celebrates quality in all of its forms. Vallepicciola is committed to producing quality wines that celebrate their unique terroir, while also sharing their passion for Chianti Classico through personalized cellar experiences that turn each tasting into an exclusive and memorable moment. Vallepicciola's winery, a project which was designed and completed in 2020, is a silent dialogue between nature and innovation. As guardians of the Tuscan essence, Vallepicciola's winery was a place designed down to the smallest detail, and in the heart of the cellar is where the art of winemaking comes to life. The winery is divided into 3 levels, two of which are underground, and built to be in harmony with the natural beauty of the surrounding area and in balance with nature.

This red wine is crafted using 100% Sangiovese that was grown in Vallepicciola's various vineyards in the Castelnuovo Berardenga zone, at the southern end of the Chianti Classico wine region. The vineyards where these grapes come from are situated between 380 and 440 metres above sea level, on limestone and clay soil with a high presence of marl and limestone. The vines were trained using the Spurred Cordon system. After harvesting the grapes during the second ten days of September, the grapes underwent alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled steel tanks, followed by 10 days of maceration. After undergoing malolactic fermentation in large, used French oak barrels, the wine was aged for 10 months in large barrels, followed by a further 6-8 months in second passage barriques. It was further refined in bottle for 3-5 months prior to release.

The 2021 growing season in Chianti Classico, while difficult to generalize due to geographical differences between the various UGAs, was concentrated, hot, and dry, with some irrelevant rainfall during the vegetative development period. Overall, the 2021 Chianti Classico vintage is an excellent one with consistent, high quality across the board. Let's see how this 2021 Chianti Classico is tasting tonight...

VALLEPICCIOLA CHIANTI CLASSICO 2021 - DOCG, Tuscany, Italy (#39690) (XD) - $19.95 $17.40
100% Sangiovese. Enticing and fragrant, the medium-high intensity nose offers lovely aromas of candied red cherry, red licorice, and red plum accented with sweet oak spice, cinnamon, clove, and savoury earth. On the dry, ripe, and medium-full to full-bodied palate it is impressively structured, dense and a bit tight at the moment, with delicious savoury wet earth, dark red cherry, blackberry, oak spice, and dried herb flavours with a lick of stony mineral notes. It has fresh, juicy acidity, while the firmly structured and dusty textured tannins have good grip. Savoury and mineral, with touches of red cherry on the long and slightly grippy finish. Enjoyable now, but will be even better in a couple of years. Highly recommended buy! Score: 91 pts

Kew Blanc de Blancs 2017 and Blanc de Noirs 2020 (Niagara) - Wine Reviews

After enjoying the excellent 2020 Kew Vineyards Marsanne a few months ago (and still widely available in stores today), sparkling wine reviews a pair of wonderful bubblies from the same producer in Niagara that arrived at the LCBO as part of the feature story on Bubbles in the LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection.

Kew Blanc de Blancs 2017 (91+ pts) and Blanc de Noirs 2020 (90+ pts)

Both of these fantastic bubblies are produced by Kew Vineyards, a boutique estate winery situated on the limestone-rich soils of the Beamsville Bench, in the heart of Niagara wine country. Kew Vineyards is situated on a 160-year-old estate, in a homestead built by William Kew that was used by the family to successfully produce carriages.

Once the Kew family's chapter ended, a new chapter began in 1975, when Mr. Hermann Weis brought his own clones from the Mosel Valley in Germany and planted some of Niagara's first Riesling vines on the estate at Kew Vineyards. Unknowingly, Mr. Weis became a true pioneer of Ontario's wine region, even while he was relentlessly met with skepticism as the community said he could never do it. Most of Niagara's Rieslings today are based on the Weis Clone.

Today, Kew Vineyards is a hidden gem of Niagara's wine country history. It is owned by Arterra Wines Canada, who acquired the historical property and its 80+ acres of vineyards in 2023. The vineyards are situated on sloping land and well-drained soils, with ideal growing temperatures.

The focus at Kew Vineyards is on small-batch winemaking, with the belief that wine is the ultimate expression of passion - passion for the art of wine making, passion for the land, and passion for the way in which it celebrates daily life. The winemaking team is led by veteran Australian winemaker Philip Dowell, who has focused his life's work on cool-climate wines. The philosophy at Kew is to allow the vineyard to tell its story of each harvest, while also expressing the terroir in order to produce world-class wines that are uniquely Niagara.

The sparkling wines reviewed below are both mono-varietal and vintage sparkling wines. The 2017 Blanc de Blancs is crafted using 100% Chardonnay, while the 2020 Blanc de Noirs was produced using 100% Pinot Noir. The 2017 growing season in Ontario was generally cool with wet weather. At the beginning of September, extended heat and sunshine resulted in one of the nicest autumn seasons on record, as well as a later harvest. Grape quantities were high with a record harvest, while the quality was excellent for white wine varieties. The growing season in 2020 provided near perfect conditions that coaxed the best out of a wide spectrum of grapes from whites to big red Bordeaux varieties, and everything in between, including Pinot Noir. The 2020 vintage produced grapes which reached phenolic ripeness, while also maintaining acidity to allow for balanced wines. 100% Chardonnay that was barrel aged for 5 months prior to bottling for secondary fermentation, and then aged on its lees for 5 years. Fresh, elegant, medium+ to medium-high intensity nose offers lovely toasty, brioche, and autolytic characters mingling with lemon citrus, stone fruit, and white peach aromas, plus whiffs of pastry and honey adding further complexity and intrigue. It's light-to-mid weighted and essentially dry on the palate with delicious citrusy, ripe apple, toasty, and brioche flavours with touches of autolytic notes and a twist of honey. It has crisp acidity and lively bubbles that freshen the juicy and slightly creamy palate. Subtly spicy with apple, toasty, and brioche flavours that are joined by leesy minerals on the long, crisp finish. Highly recommended buy! Score: 91+ pts

KEW BLANC DE NOIRS 2020 - Traditional method, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment, Ontario, Canada (#380030) (D) - $32.95 $28.70
100% Pinot Noir that was gently whole-berry pressed and fermented in stainless steel, followed by ageing on its lees for 2 years. The medium+ intensity nose offers apple, pear, red cherry, and lemon citrus aromas with touches of biscuit and toast. Some autolytic and honeyed aromas develop with time in the glass. The vibrant, medium-bodied palate is dry with delicious toasty, apple, pear, and lemon citrus flavours with hints of honey, biscuit, and mineral. It has fresh, vibrant acidity and crisp, refreshing mousse, along with a textured and slightly grippy mid-palate. Apple, lemon citrus, and mineral notes linger on the long, crisp, and dry finish. Recommended buy! Score: 90+ pts

Wakefield Jaraman Shiraz 2022 (Australia) - Wine Review

red wine review is the latest vintage of an always terrific Australian Shiraz that arrived at the LCBO as part of the recent LCBO VINTAGES New Release Collection.

It is produced by Wakefield Wines, which is known as Taylors Wines in Australia. This family estate winery was established near the Wakefield River in South Australia's Clare Valley in 1969 by Bill Taylor Sr. and his two sons. The Taylor family worked as wine merchants, but desired to have their own vineyards and create their own, authentic, and estate-grown wines. By 1969, they settled on a site near the Wakefield River and established Taylors Wines.

Today, Wakefield Wines is led by brothers Mitchell, Justin, and Clinton, the third-generation of the Taylor family, the sons of Bill Taylor and grandchildren of Bill Taylor Sr. The brothers continue their family's tradition of crafting delicious wines that stand the test of time, while also firmly fixed upon the future and the next generation. The family's philosophy is to craft wines sustainably and responsibly, while respecting the fruit and where it comes from. Their goal is to be Australia's best wine company at applying best practiced principles in environmental management to enhance sustainable business activities and products. They also favour the most innovative techniques to improve energy efficiency, water conservation, and packaging, while also preventing or eliminating waste and pollution. Through a holistic approach to environmental management, they aim to achieve sustainable land and biodiversity management outcomes for both the present and future. Taylors Wine is also a founding member of Australia's First Families of Wine, which was formed in 2009.

Wakefield Wines has several ranges of wines in their portfolio, with this wine coming from their premium Jaraman range, which celebrates Australia's iconic wine regions which provide great diversity. With the Jaraman range, the Taylor family searches for parcels of extraordinary fruit which they can use to showcase the distinctive regional characters and style for each grape variety. The fruit for Jaraman wines is sourced from celebrated wine regions in Australia that are renowned for producing particular varieties. At the winery, the winemaker at Wakefield ensures that the distinct regional characteristics of each variety are preserved and enhanced, while also making sure that the fruit is the star of the wine, and any winemaking influence only plays a supporting role. Respecting the fruit is a core value at Wakefield Wines, and the Jaraman range showcases the skill and dedication to this core value.

While the previous vintage of this wine - the 2021 Wakefield Jaraman Shiraz - was nearly equal parts of fruit from Clare Valley and McLaren Vale, this latest vintage is 100% Shiraz with 72% Clare Valley fruit and 28% McLaren Vale fruit. Traditional vinification methods were used to craft this red wine, with parcels from the two regions kept separate until blending prior to oak ageing. The wine was matured for an average of 12 to 15 months in a selection of new and used American oak hogsheads and then bottled.

The 2022 vintage in Clare Valley was a year of both high quality and quantity as the crops basked in the mild, sunny days without any rain or humidity. The stunningly beautiful weather provided uninterrupted and idyllic conditions that were more typical of the better vintages during the 80s and 90s. In McLaren Vale, it was a slightly different story as inconsistent fruit set reduced yields by about 15%, which likely explains the reduction of McLaren Vale fruit in this cuvée. The growing season featured mild conditions of warm days and cool nights, with minimal rain and no heat spikes. The end result produced some of the best McLaren Vale reds in years with vibrant wines having supple tannins and bright, natural acidity. Screw cap. The fragrant, medium+ to medium-high intensity nose has plummy dark fruit, mulberry, blackberry, and black cherry aromas alongside savoury oak, chocolate, clove, and subtle Asian spice notes. The medium+ bodied palate is dry with delicious mulberry, brambly, plum, blackberry, sweet spice, clove, and chocolatey oak flavours in a slightly jammy profile. It is quite firmly structured on the palate, with smooth, ripe tannins. Gently tangy acids are crisp, juicy, and succulent, while the chocolatey oak, plum, and earthy notes linger on the long, well-structured finish. Recommended buy to enjoy into the early 2030s. Score: 89 pts
